By Pamela C Smith

A vocal coach can only go so far, when working with a singer to improve singing voice. The truth is that for many vocalists, it isn't the body and technique that is in need of coaching, it is the mind. When learning to sing, or working on improving the voice, it is not only necessary to focus on qualities such as breathing, tone and inflection. A singer also needs to have self confidence and the ability to relax the body so that vocalization techniques learned can be applied effectively. The following tips on how to improve singing voice address how to improve, both physically and mentally.

To improve singing voice, you will perform better if you feel emotion for the song. In some cases, you may not have a choice in music selection, but whenever possible, choose a song that has meaning to you. An audience can see and feel the emotions of some of today's best performers, who show passion for the words in their songs. However, do not pick a piece based solely on your love for that particular song, if it isn't within your vocal abilities and range.

To practice finding emotion and a feel for your song selection, it is important to allow yourself the private space to let yourself go. Whether your best vocal performance is in the shower or standing in front of a microphone in the privacy of your own home, you will improve singing voice by allowing yourself privacy to practice in your most relaxed state. You will gain confidence this way, knowing you can perform the musical piece at perfect pitch and tone.

The next suggestion involves stating the obvious - you must practice. Just as a musicians need to practice their instruments, you must think of your voice as your instrument. Even if singing comes more naturally for you, it is not an automated process. The ability to sing involves not only technique but a complex series of muscles, working in harmony. They must be exercised and controlled to perform optimally. So improve singing voice by joining in songs at home, even if just to your favorite music on your stereo.

State of mind makes the difference between an awesome performance or a poor one. A singer must learn to relax both the mind and body, so that he or she can apply the necessary physical skills and vocal techniques. Learning relaxation skills like yoga or meditating can improve singing voice by giving a singer more control when it is time to relax. It is very important that facial muscles aren't tense and shoulders aren't tight during a performance. Some find by swaying a little while singing, their tension disappears.

On the physical side, body alignment and posture are keys to improve singing voice. During a song, with the body relaxed, feet should be shoulder width apart. Shoulders should be back and relaxed, while arms slightly out to optimize air intake in the lungs. The diaphragm is the control center of the entire vocalization process, so be sure you are breathing correctly. When inhaling, the abdomen should be expanding, not the chest. Adequate breathing is necessary to put the right amount of pressure on the vocal cords.

Finally, to improve your vocal range before your performance, be sure to warm up. Just like an athlete stretches before a big game, you need to loosen all of the parts you will rely on to sing at that perfect pitch. Watch what you eat and drink, avoiding dairy products. Drink plenty of water or hot tea with lemon before you go on stage. If you have practiced these improve singing voice tips, you will be more confident and in top shape, guaranteed to give your audience an amazing performance.
