Mixtapes or mixed tapes are song compilations that have been recorded in a certain order and which also traditionally mean that the songs will be recorded onto compact sized audio cassette tapes.

That is not to say that this term excludes the CD, MP3 and the minidisc; it is just that the concept is very closely related to the audio tape and so most people continue to associate it with the audio cassette.
The earliest versions of these kinds of tapes were available as 8 track bootleg tapes that could easily be bought at a flea market and at truck stops. The first of such tapes came out in the sixties and the trend lasted well into the eighties.
