How to Improve Your Lead Guitar Techniques

By Eugene Walker

With one goal in mind, people take up playing the guitar. That goal, is to become the lead player in a rock group, being able to set the fans hearts on fire, with the lightning speed with which they can play. These guitar players, who actually end up in grou[s like this, will spen a lot of dedicated hours, months, even years, honing their talent. They need dedication to keep practicing, to grow to become this caliber of musician. They will likely then, and only then, become lead guitar soloists, in a group. Sometimes, the novice guitar player will not have access to the kind of resources that are available to help them grow in their techniques and to achieve this goal in their life.

How you hold your pick and how you actually pluck your strings, are two things that you should learn. These are some of the tips and techniques, to develop the skills needed to become a good guitar player. This will affect how the harmonics of your guitar are played out, This will have a dramatic impact on your playing skills. Keep the pick, without much of your fingers sticking out, but have your fingers close to the edge of the pick. When you hit the notes ,then the harmonics will be heard in a more beautiful way.

You will need to develop a strong hand in order to play the guitar for the lead, as your strong fingers, will also be of benefit to your playing skills and the fact that you will be able to play faster. Lead guitarists need to be fast in their playing, but that comes after you have practiced for a good long time, making sure that you hit the correct notes every time. Work to master the scale, slowly at first, then you will become more confident, as you have hit the right notes correctly. This confidence will improve your skills in time. Your speed will come later, after you have perfected this system.

Backing tracks has been a definite boost for the guitarist, in helping them to play lead, with a full band playing behind them. This is a very valuable trick, which is used by many famous guitar players, for their rehearsals and honing their skills as a lead guitarist. The enjoyment is greatly increased when you have the tracks to play along with. Your skill level is also increased dramatically and you yourself will be surprised how your ability to play more effectively, will improve so much, you will wonder why you didn't purchase them long before this.

Practicing your lead guitar skills, with the backing tracks, helps to improve your speed, plus your improvisation techniques, on a much better rate, than you would without using them. These backing track tapes will provide you with the structure that you need, especially when to do some day play as the lead in front of a real band. Your rythym skills will be so improved, that you will be able to perform in front of a live audience and that of course, is your primary goal.
