History And Developments In Camera Lenses

By Farry Hard

Many would actually say that the lenses in the past were actually better however, others disagree and appreciate the advanced improvements. The sharpness of each one is only one aspect that is distinctly different and very much improved. There are a large variety of different camera lenses designed for special photographic purposes to create exceptional images.

The initial development was actually established in eighteen hundred four by William Wollaston. While it was initially used for the purposes of glasses to correct vision, it began to be used for photography later in eighteen twelve. Many focus-free box cameras that we know from the past have this type of lens and some of the current ones are actually similar.

The name Protar was given to the first really modern version which was able to be adjusted for wide angles. This was invented in eighteen ninety by Paul Rudolph. Most professional telephoto types are still manufactured following this formula. Later, the Cooke Triplet became the economy version in eighteen ninety-three and was used in one of the most popular cameras of all time known as the Argus C3.

The Tessar was developed due to Paul Rudolph having a lack of enthusiasm with his development in the performance of the Protar. The Tessar was actually a bit similar in operation to the Cooke Triplet and was later perfected about nineteen thirty. Most popular camera models used around that time period has this type of lens.

After many initial bugs had been worked out then the important issue became to use only the available light to capture photographs. This problem began to be tackled in nineteen twenty-three by Ernemann Ernostar when he developed a Cooke Triplet version known as the Ernostar to deal with low-light issues. This was the first usable lens that could actually work with only the light that was available and it changed everything. All future advancements to this particular version were actually made under the more well-known name of Sonnar.

Beck Hill Sky was the first Fish Eye invented in nineteen twenty-three. The term originated because it is meant to give the perspective that a fish would have if it were looking up toward the sky. The intention was to take a three hundred sixty degree barrel image to do cloud studies.

The term of macro photography is at least somewhat familiar to most people and they understand that it includes ranges from life-size to much larger than life. There have been some very interesting photos taken with this type of photography and they have been published for all of us to view. Heinz Kilfitt is the inventor during nineteen fifty-five of a Tessar mount that has a Makro-Kilar. It was much later during the mid-seventies that the macro zoom began to be used.

The zoom happens to be an all-time favorite for most people, but in the beginning it did not produce high-quality images. By nineteen seventy-four things had changed with Ponder and Best Vivitar presenting the public with a macro zoom that was professional quality. After that time, the zoom continued to inspire development with other lenses of the future. A major development of all time is certainly the new auto-focus camera lenses that we all benefit from.
