BRASELTON, GA. (October 4th, 2011) - The Peugeot Lion roared to victory at Petit Le Mans as Michelin and its technical partner teams from Peugeot, Oreca Peugeot and Aston Martin Racin claimed the top three spots in the final race of the 2011 American Le Mans Series season and the penultimate round of the prestigious Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.
Michelin technical partner teams took wins in every professional class of open competition, and secured the ALMS GT category tire championship.
Peugeot's victory here in the 1,000-mile race at Road Atlanta clinches the ILMC Prototype Manufacturer's championship. Finishing sixth overall and first in the LMP2 class was the HPD ARX-01G of Christophe Bouchut, Joao Barbosa, and Scott Tucker.
Ferrari and Porsche Claim GT wins for Michelin.
Turnabout was fair play in the fierce GT category where a powerful 24-car field represented Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, BMW, Ford, Jaguar, Lotus, and Aston Martin. The AF Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia of Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni, and Pierre Kaffer claimed the GT victory and extended Ferrari's lead in the ILMC GT championship heading into the final round at Zhuhai, China.
A late race chase and spectacular winning pass just two laps from the finish gave the ALMS GT victory to the Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 RSR of Joerg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Patrick Pilet. Bergmeister's bold move secured the ALMS GT Tire Championship for Michelin.
"Michelin has done so much for us as a team and for me as a driver. I am grateful for all the tire development they have done. Without them I probably wouldn't have won any championships, so I am happy to help them win a championship," said Bergmeister, driver, Flying Lizard Porsche, and five-time ALMS champion.
The LMP Challenge class, featuring identical Chevrolet powered Oreca chassis with Michelin tires, saw the PR1 Mathiason, team and drivers Ryan Lewis, Henri Richard and Ken Dobson claim the race victory while CORE autosport's Gunnar Jeannette and Ricardo Gonzalez ended in an absolute tie with Genoa Racing's Eric Lux for the ALMS driver championship. Each had two wins, two seconds, two thirds, two fourths, and a single a fifth place finish in the nine race season.
"Today's race was a great ending to an exciting American Le Mans series season," said Silvia Mammone, manager motorsports, Michelin North America. "Winning the Prototype and GT class in ILMC and ALMS plus the ALMS GT Tire manufacturer's championship is a tribute to our technical partner teams and to the outstanding efforts of our Michelin tire designers, and engineers who continued to push throughout the season," said Mammone
