A Wi-Fi Tablet Reviewed: The Dell Streak 7

By William Becklely

The first iPad was received with skepticism; people believed that their laptop computers covered the same bases more than adequately. But then, the actual purpose of the iPad began to become more obvious. As the market caught on and Apple's accountants began rubbing their hands with glee, the other big computer and cellular companies sat up and took notice. Tablets like the iPad became the modern must-have. Not surprisingly, Dell is wanting to obtain its piece of the pie. The product offering Dell is pinning its hopes on is what they're calling Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet. Whether this tablet makes the grade and is worth the money is what we will try to resolve in this article.

One remarkable feature is movies are clearer to watch than ipad movies. The first "con" of this Dell tablet is the company that is making it. Quality and reliability are not trademarks of this company's past offerings. Dell in addition has a dubious track record of providing customer service. A number of customers have reported that when they made service calls after the warranty expiration date, they were charged. Buying a product from Dell can have future implications - and not just price - which may well outweigh the smart savings from it being a relatively inexpensive product.

Multitasking is made possible by the tablet's OS, a version of the Android OS nicknamed "Froyo." It's not a requirement to keep certain programs "live" in order to receive messages from the system's notification service, while at the same time listening to MP3s and keeping your GPS information updated. It offers super easy access to your Gmail and other e-mail apps and accounts, so you don't have to concerned about whether you can be reached when you have your tablet with you.

Video chat was not present in the first iPad offering, and it's terrific that it is with this tablet. The Dell Streak 7 tablet, using Qik software and a front-facing panel camera, lets you video chat. The only catch is that the only ones you will be able to chat with are people who have a Streak tablet or a compatible device. So video chatting with others who are on other platforms is not guaranteed. A fillip for this Dell tablet is the integrated offering of the On Demand service from Blockbuster. We're not so certain that this is a good feature, after all, because of the troubles Blockbuster is having lately.

Thus yar, there aren't lots of reviews about this specific product though some people are curious to know what the purpose of this product could actually be. It isn't an extensive tablet - it can't communicate between non Streak-compatible devices so its functionality is very limited. Still, a keen desire for a tablet computer coupled with a limited budget might make this an ideal way to familiarize yourself with the technology. Before you send your money off, though, take care and make certain that you know what you're investing in.
