The screen would work, show menus but the camera itself wouldn't show anything on the screen with the lens was open. It was very odd, we waited a few minutes and tried again and it worked fine. Everyone at the pool was looking at me like I was crazy because I had a camera in the pool. The lifeguards even asked me questions about it because they had never seen anything like it. Having lost my last Stylus Tough, I upgraded to this model. While, I still think it is a good niche product, the startup time is terrible, and it does appear to take much longer to focus and snap pictures.
If you expect more of the camera, get something bigger and more elaborate but it will cost you. This camera is great, I mean waterproof, and you can't beat it! After less than one year it all of a sudden broke when I was using it in the pool. Some seal must have "popped" and the camera was filled with water (yes battery hatch lock was on). I found out some water drops got inside even it was properly sealed. Also I have to admit the ocean was a kind of rough that day. Most of the pictures come blurry and the color of the pictures is greyish. The flash is very poor. When I ordered my camera I received it earlier then the estimated time, which is awesome. When I got the camera it came looking great.
My husband hands it to me and it is extremely warm. I try to shut it off and it won't shut off. It has been about 3 months and now the camera won't even turn on. I'm sending it back to Olympus, we will see, I researched "Tough" Cameras for a few months before I made my purchase.
I also really like the rechargeable battery; just like my cell phone it charges as I have it plugged in to the USB port. I think it will pay for itself just in the battery savings alone. Operation is aggravating. My wife and I saw this camera in Best Buy and she really liked it. I have had this camera for only about a week and I love it! The pictures and movies are so clear.
I took the camera to a gym to take pictures and movies of my son playing floor hockey. The images are so disappointing.
I bought this as a fix so that I could at least take some pictures while snorkeling. Out of the box, this camera was awful.
