Choosing The Best Baby Toys For Your Child's Age

By Pat Saltamaccia

All children are born to play. It's how they learn about their surrounding environment and their world. As they grow and learn, the types of playthings needed to stimulate growth changes. It's up to you to make sure they have the best baby toys for their age and growth stage.

All children have limited vision when first born. They can best discern images that are sharply contrasting, such as black and white. Bright contrasting colors are also good to help the child attain a higher level of visual acuity.

Children under the age of six months will enjoy sensory stimulating items that make a little noise and have different textures. Rattles and teething rings with bumps and ridges are a good example. Giving your child a baby gym will encourage them to reach out and explore. This is the first step in discovering the world around them.

At six months your little one should be sitting up, which brings about the opportunity to add more complex items. They will be sitting and attempting to manipulate things in their hands. Plush animals, activity centers and things with push buttons that make noise will be a bit hit with this crowd. You might also want to give them a cloth family picture album.

Between the ages of 12 and 18 months of age your child has acquired several new motor skills and play has become more complex. Building blocks and play sets are holding their attention and container items such as wagons are being used. Age appropriate push vehicles will be a delight for both boys and girls. This is also the time for toy instruments and walk behind items like shopping carts and lawn mowers.

Kitchen centers, construction sets and playhouses make the best baby toys for this age group. They will be emulating parents more and more as they grow and these centers allow for imaginative play. Riding toys such as rocking horses and small tricycles are appropriate. You will find that books are available for all stages of your child's growth.
