Up till just recently the sole way to actually learn to play the piano or the keyboards has been to attend regular weekly lessons with a trained professional piano teacher. You would undoubtedly spend some time learning how to read music, practising scales and learning a selection of classical pieces. There have consistently been 1 or 2 self taught individuals but on the whole it was simpler and better to go to a regular teacher. Now with the latest developments in technology it is totally feasible to get top quality piano lessons in an audio visual format downloaded to your own PC that are just as effective if not much more than attending standard piano lessons with a teacher.

There are presently many popular distance learning courses available for learning the piano, they can be downloaded and played back on your PC or you can buy them on a standard DVD. The better courses are well thought out and will lead you from absolute beginner level to a very high intermediate level. The material will generally be split up into lessons with a quick video showing you what to do and a sequence of audio files with more examples and explanations. It's really a little like having a private piano instructor right there with you in your home available for lessons whenever you've got the time.

To learn to play the piano or the keyboards at home this way is so comfortable and very different to the more traditional way to learn. You will only move onto the more advanced levels when you have really accepted, practiced and integrated the previous lessons. If you don't feel one hundred pc happy with the current lesson then you're under no pressure to move on, you may also go back and repeat previous lessons if you happen to feel you want more practice. On the other hand, if you are good to go on then you don't have to delay until next weeks piano lesson.

Learning piano in the peace of your own home has many advantages but one of the most enticing it that is is intensely cheap with a home learning course typically costing close to the same as 1 or 2 lessons with a professional teacher. Also, as the courses have a non-traditional approach to teaching you will be learning multiple styles and methodologies at a time.
